While pursuing a PhD in Economics, Yechury was taken into custody with along with many other leaders who would later go on to play a major role in national politics, for opposing the Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government in 1975.

UPSC aspirants' death: Delhi High Court asks CBI to state reason behind waterlogging
The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the CBI to inform it the reason behind the heavy waterlogging in Old Rajinder Nagar on July 27 when three civil services aspirants died after drowning in a flooded coaching basement. The co-owners of the basement -- Parvinder Singh, Tajinder Singh, Harvinder Singh and Sarbjit Singh -- had moved the high court last month for bail on the ground that they are merely the landlords of the basement which was let out on rental basis to the coaching centre and, therefore, they had no role whatsoever in the unfortunate event.

Sitaram Yechury was hospitalised at AIIMS on August 19 to receive treatment for a chest infection resembling pneumonia.?Yechury became a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1975, shortly after joining the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in 1974. During the Emergency period, while still a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Yechury was detained. He also served as the president of the JNU Students’ Union on three separate occasions between 1977 and 1988.
