Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao was born on 24 July 1976 and is known by his initials KTR. He is an Indian politician serving as Telangana's Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development; Industries and Commerce; and Information Technology, Electronics, and Communications. He is also a Legislative Assembly member for Sircilla and the working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi.

His father, K. Chandrashekar Rao, is Telangana's current chief minister and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi's founder (presently Bharat Rashtra Samiti). CNN-IBN and Ritz Magazine have given Rama Rao the 'Most Inspirational Icon of the Year 2015' award.

Personal life and Education
Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao (K. T. Rama Rao) was born in the Karimnagar district of Telangana (formerly Andhra Pradesh), India, on 24 July 1976. He is the son of K. Chandrashekhar Rao, who established the Telangana Rashtra Samithi political party and is the first and current Telangana chief minister. On the other hand, his mother, K. Shobha Rao, is a homemaker.?

His younger sister, K. Kavitha, is a former Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha for the Nizamabad constituency. K. T. Rama Rao is married to Shailima and the couple has two children named, Himanshu Rao, a son, and a daughter Alekhya Rao.

When he was ten years old, he shifted to Hyderabad and joined the Amravati Public School at Yousufguda prior to transferring to the Nalanda Public School at Mehdipatnam. He finished his Schooling at St. George's Grammar School, Abids Road.?

Further, he attended intermediate from Vignan Junior College at Vadlamudi, Guntur, and proceeded to graduate with a BSc in Microbiology, Chemistry, and Botany from Nizam College of the Osmania University at Hyderabad. He also has two Post-Graduate degrees; an MBA in Marketing and E-Commerce from City University of New York (CUNY) and an MSc in Biotechnology from the University of Pune.

Political and Professional Life
During 1998-99, K.T.R. started his professional career as an IT professional and interned at the shipping and ocean logistics firm INTTRA Inc. on Madison Avenue, New York, USA.

In 2002, K.T.R. was commended for winning over TRS in the GHMC polls since the party had an unpleasant loss when it contested for the (Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad) elections and it ended up winning only one division.?

In 2006, after the resignation of his father, K. Chandrasekhar Rao from the United Progressive Alliance-I (UPA); K. T. Rama Rao left his job to join the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and started campaigning on behalf of his father who contested for the Karimnagar Lok Sabha by-election around the same year. K. Chandrasekhar Rao won by more than 2 lakhs.

Rao started his political career in 2009 when he contested the Sircilla Assembly constituency's Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Elections. He won by 171 votes, defeating independent candidate K. K. Mahender Reddy.

In July 2010, the High Court of Andhra Pradesh ordered the Election Commission of India to hold by-polls in Sircilla and Vemulawada among different towns across the Telangana area. Rao contested again from Sircilla and won against K. K. Mahender Reddy with a margin of 68,219 votes.

He also held Rail Roko agitation after police and paramilitary forces were deployed by the Kiran Kumar Reddy government to control what was happening. Rao courted arrest when he tried to take part in the 'Samara Deeksha' agitation at Indira Park in Hyderabad on 27 January 2013.

Rao requested that a Bill be presented in Parliament in an interview with a National News Channel. He additionally announced that the approaching "Telangana government will not compromise on any aspect of administration being delegated to the union government with regard to (the city of) Hyderabad".

At last, the first Telangana Legislative Assembly elections for the 29th state of the Indian Union were conducted on 30 April 2014. Rao was contested as the MLA candidate for TRS from Sircilla against Konduri Ravinder Rao from the INC, winning the seat for the third consecutive time by a margin of 53,004 votes. TRS arose as the ruling party with the single biggest majority in the assembly, winning a decisive mandate of 66 out of 119 seats.

On 2 June 2014, Rao was sworn in as a Telangana Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Panchayat Raj, and Cabinet Minister for Information Technology.

He was appointed as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi Party (TRS)'s Executive Working President by the President and CM Kalvakuntla Chandrashekhar Rao.

Positions held (till date)
  • Minister for Information Technology– Soon after assuming office, K. T. Rama Rao as the Information Technology (IT) Minister advised the Chief Minister of huge scope projects for a dynamic Hyderabad in a review meeting under the Information Technology and Investment Region (ITIR) Policy.
  • Panchayat Raj minister – On 19 January 2015, Rao reported that at least 26 government representatives of different departments will be brought to work under the village sarpanches chairmanship through a new Act to bring strength to the Telangana's town panchayats. He also guaranteed that his government would select special tribunals and ombudsman with the end goal of accountability and complaint redressal. Rao expressed that the government has plans to spend Rs. 642 crores in 150 most backward mandals till the year 2020 for further developing livelihood and human development index under the Telangana Palle Pragathi programme.
  • GHMC elections- In February 2016, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the urban local government body of Hyderabad was held. Rao was in charge of the party's campaign for the election. The election has seen Rao effectively visiting each of the 150 wards of the city within a week, leading over 100 public meetings while canvassing for TRS.

KTR has been aggressive about fostering the IT and high-tech industry in the new state post assuming office. His efforts successfully helped the state double the IT exports within just five years. He has proactively taken up a few leading Initiatives and achieved multiple awards too. His initiatives include:

Creating proactive and business-friendly Industrial, IT, and Electronics policies; making easy electronics manufacturing ecosystem in the State; promoting entrepreneurship via the making of T Hub – India’s biggest incubator for startups; India’s biggest prototyping centre for electronics, electromechanical and mechanical startups – T-Works; a primary initiative to develop the quality of citizen service delivery by leveraging the deep penetration of mobile utilisation in the state -T AppFolio; announcing 2020 as the ‘Year of AI’ (Artificial Intelligence); to create innovation-driven economy in Telangana – TSIC (Telangana State Innovation Cell); for speedy processing of multiple clearances needed for setting up of industries at a single point based on the self-certification – TS-iPASS (Telangana State Industrial Project Approval and Self-Certification System); creating skilled workers through Telangana Academy of Skill and Knowledge (TASK); providing quality education and training to identified groups through State-run Satellite Communications Network i.e. T-SAT, an exclusive start-up incubator for women entrepreneurs — We Hub.

The State has launched a Water Grid project to give tap water to around 8 million homes; this project piggybacks on the optic fibre trenches to create a large-scale broadband network in India. Making a step ahead to deliver government services to rural citizens over the Web, he has started the E-Panchayat project.

KTR got the 'Audi-Ritz Inspirational Icon of the Year Award' (Politics) for 2015, the 'SKOCH Challenger Award' in the Start-up India category for Telangana's breath-taking drive T-Hub, and the 'SKOCH Best Performing IT Minister Award' for the year 2020.

  • On Oct 6, 2023; Telangana minister KT Rama Rao hit out at PM Modi over his "I refused him entry (into the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance)" swipe at Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and saying it was "disgraceful of the Prime Minister to stoop so low and unfortunate".
  • In June 2022, Telangana's KTR lashed out at the BJP over international controversy over the Prophet remarks. Rao had lashed out at the BJP government at the center, saying the party should apologize for the comments its members make.
  • Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), Telangana's ruling party, avoided the joint opposition session and is hoping to go it solo in the 2024 general elections
  • In April 2023, KT Rama Rao got famous for calling out 'Munna Bhai MBBS Types' in BJP.

Net Worth
As per the NDTV report in 2018, KT Rama Rao is 400 per cent richer, with his yearly income expanding from Rs 29 lakhs in 2014 to around Rs 74 lakhs in 2018. His wife Shaimila Kalvakuntla’s income also shot up from Rs 21 lakhs in 2014 to over Rs 4 crores now.?

Rama Rao presented documents showing that his wife is richer than him. KTR has Rs 4.93 crore while his wife possesses assets worth over Rs 36.68 crore. Their daughter K Alekhya has Rs 19.50 lakh in the bank.
